Chinese Visas for Tibet

Chinese Visas for Tibet

No matter which direction you enter Tibet from, you will need one of the two versions of the Chinese visa to be completed before you enter China. While the Chinese Entry Visa for those entering from mainland China must be applied for by you personally, the Group Tourist Visa for entry from Nepal is done by us as your tour operator once you reach Kathmandu.

Chinese Entry Visa

The Chinese Entry Visa is the required visa for those that intend to travel to Tibet from mainland China, and is required to be processed prior to your travel to China. The visa must be applied for at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in your home or resident country, as China does not have any E-visa and Visa on Arrival options for applying for the tourist visa.

There are two ways to apply for a visa through the embassies of consular offices, either by going in person to process it or by using one of the approved Chinese Visa Application Service (CVAS) Centers. These CVAS Centers exist worldwide on five continents, and offer a visa application service to tourists for an arranged fee. If you are busy or not comfortable making a personal application, you can find your local approved CVAS Center from the website of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China for your home or resident country.

Application Requirements

Applying for the visa through the embassy or consular offices now requires tourists to complete the visa application form online, using the online visa application PDF document at http://www.china-embassy.org/chn/lszj/bgxz/P020130830121570742708.pdf and then printing it for application through the embassy or consular office in person, or by downloading it and filling it out on your own computer before printing. As of April 2018, handwritten forms are not being accepted.

It is advisable not to mention Tibet in your visa application, as this can often cause problems with applying for the visa. When mentioning that you intend to travel to Tibet as a tourist, the Chinese Embassy will ask for your Tibet Travel Permit before accepting your application. Since you are not able to get this without the visa, it can cause major problems.

The standard requirements for a Chinese Entry Visa are:

  1. Valid Passport with at least six month’s validity remaining at the time of travel
  2. Completed and printed application form with signature
  3. Attached photo meeting the requirements of the Chinese visa application *

* Passport-sized photos are accepted; however heavy-framed spectacles must not be worn in the photo.

Applications made personally through your local embassy or consular office can be made from Monday to Friday during normal office hours without the need to make an appointment. Walk-in applications are now the only way to process a tourist visa, and are done on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

Visa Fees

Fees for Chinese Entry Visas depend on your country of origin, as well as whether you use a CVAS Center or not. The CVAS Centers normally charge an additional fee equivalent to around US$ 90 and above for processing the visa on your behalf.

All visa payments are made on collection of the visa when making a personal application at an embassy or consular office. Payment can only be made by Credit or Debit Card (MasterCard or Visa only), Money Order, Cashier’s Check (from a major bank), and Company Check (in selected countries only). Personal checks and cash are not accepted as forms of payment.

Group Tourist Visa

For those entering Tibet through Nepal, a different type of visa is issued, and you are not required to obtain the standard Chinese Entry Visa in advance of your trip. This is known as the Group Tourist Visa, and is applied for on your behalf by our representative in Kathmandu on your arrival in Nepal.

The Group Tourist Visa, while usually used for a group of travelers entering Tibet as one tour, can also be applied for an individual, and being part of a group of individuals is not a requirement. However, if you are part of a group tour, then all members of the group are included on the visa document, and all members must enter and exit Tibet at the same time and through the same port of entry/exit.

If you are intending to travel on to China and require a separate visa from the group, please let us know when you contact us. The visa is only for a period of 30 days from the date of issue, and cannot normally be extended, so your time in mainland China may be limited.

Tibet Group Visa

Application Requirements

The Group Tourist Visa is applied for once you arrive in Nepal, and requires at least three working days to process. This means that you need to be in Kathmandu at least five days before your expected date of departure in order to allow us the required time to process your visa. Personal applications are not accepted, and only a registered tour operator such as Tibet Group Tour can make the application on your behalf.

The visa application requires your original passport, one passport-sized photo, and the completed application form (supplied by us), which we will collect from you at your hotel once you check in. The visa application also requires a “Letter of Invitation”, which we will have already prepared for your trip to Tibet with the application for your Tibet Travel Permit.

Once we have all the documents, we will make the application to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu on your behalf, and we will collect the completed and approved visa on the third day from application. You should keep a photocopy of your passport Information page and Nepal visa sticker (if required) for travel in Kathmandu and Nepal whilst awaiting the return of your original passport.
